Chefs hail Tuscan kale

Tuscany gets plenty of adoration for its camera-ready landscapes, its free-flowing Chianti, and its trove of Renaissance art. But now we Americans need to thank it for a vegetable, too.

In just the past decade or so, the lovable leafy green known as Tuscan kale has ridden the wave of interest in Italian cooking and rooted itself in Bay Area markets and gardens.

"It has really taken off," says grower Noah Barnes of Capay Organic, a farm in the Capay Valley (Yolo County) that supplies several local markets and restaurants with Tuscan kale.

Sales have climbed every year in the decade that the farm has been growing it, says Barnes, who watches customers eye the curious vegetable at winter farmers' markets. "People are attracted to it right away just by its appearance."

But this elongated kale with the crinkly blue-green leaves and pebbly texture remains a mystery to many.

Gingered Pear Soup

To poach the pears, put the water, wine, sugar, orange slices, and cloves in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat; simmer for 5 minutes. Add the pears; simmer, turning occasionally, until they are tender, about 15 minutes (less if the pears are riper).

Meanwhile, wrap the ginger, bay leaf, cinnamon stick, peppercorns, anise seed, and clove in cheesecloth and tie with a string. Pour the pear nectar into a small saucepan; add the cheesecloth bag. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat; cover and simmer for 15 minutes. Taste and let the broth steep if you want a stronger spice flavor.

To serve, place a pear upright in the center of a dessert bowl. (Even the bottom of the pear, if necessary so it will stand up straight.) Ladle the soup into the bowl.

Comfort Food for Those Cold Winter Days

Coming inside from a cold, wet, wintry day and smelling a pot of simmering stew, flaky pastry on chicken pie, or a hearty macaroni and cheese casserole will bring a smile to almost everyone.

One-dish meals are especially handy if you are short of time and still want a well-balanced meal for the family. Most of the ingredients are cooked together, so serving and cleanup are at a minimum.

When making these recipes, think ahead and make extra for the next day, or freeze leftovers that can be used at a later date.

The following recipes are easy to make and absolutely delicious. If you're not a fan of dumplings in your beef stew, make a batch of baking powder biscuits or have thick slices of multigrain bread as an alternative.

If you're wanting something other than pastry on the chicken pot pie, put a layer of creamy mashed potatoes on top and brown in the oven.

In the Big Easy, gumbo goes meatless on Friday

In these northern environs, gumbo is a dish that many think of but once a year, as a marker of the pre-Lent celebration of Mardi Gras.

But down in New Orleans, where gumbo is the most important dish in the Louisiana lexicon, most restaurants serve some version of it year round - at least once a week.

At this time of year, two days post-Carnival, with strands of glittering beads, doubloons and plastic spears - parade throws all - already gathering dust, Lent has arrived in the largely Catholic city.

And the people must suffer with seafood gumbo.

For Friday is gumbo day in scores of New Orleans restaurants, and many comply with the Lenten restrictions, preparing it without meat.

One of NOLA's best gumbo haunts, Dunbar's Creole Cooking, flooded badly following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 and has since relocated to the cafeteria space at Loyola University's law school.

An American Unoriginal

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' Just words! 'I have a dream.' Just words!" There's no question that what Obama said Saturday was similar (videos of both speeches are here):

"Don't tell me words don't matter! 'I have a dream.' Just words. 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.' Just words! [Applause.] 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself.' Just words--just speeches!" But isn't it a bit heavy-handed to accuse Obama of plagiarism? This is a serious charge in academia and journalism, professions in which words are the final product. By contrast, language is a mere instrument for politicians. They hire speechwriters to put words in their mouths, something that would also be frowned upon in academia and journalism.

Ngo doubt about it, this is a race to catch

The festival falls on the full moon day of the 10th month on the lunar calendar. This year, it falls on November 24.

It usually features many other cultural and entertainment activities, chiefly at Khmer pagodas, but the boat races receive top billing.

The races, showcasing the martial spirit of the Khmers, have attracted 50 boats this year, each representing a pagoda or village, and will be held on November 23-24.

"Ten of these boats will be crewed by women," organisers said.

A ngo boat has a curved bow and tail and is managed by 50 or 60 skilful rowers. The trees used for making the boat must be very old, often 24-30m in length.

"As the boat is sacred it must be made in the yard of a pagoda and kept in the pagoda," Lam Reng, head of the Soc Trangs Nationalities Committee, said.

Dearborn Co. Drug Sweep Nets Dozens Of Suspects

A drug sweep in Dearborn County Friday night put dozens of suspects behind bars.

9News was there as the raids were made.

Several police agencies originally targeted those who traffic in prescription drugs, but that wasn't all they found.

Many of the suspects were wanted for "doctor shopping."

It is when an individual sees several doctors in hopes of gaining many prescriptions for drugs.

From there they either use the drugs or sell them on the street.

During the raids it was clear that suspects who are affiliated with prescription drug shopping are also often involved in illegal narcotics as well.

In total, more than a dozen suspects were placed into custody for warrants related to doctor shopping.

9News was there at an apartment complex in Lawrenceburg where marijuana and a small girl were also found inside.

Boku Super Food: An Astonishing New Premium Superfood Product Reviewed ...

NaturalNews) Let me say emphasize right from the start that NaturalNews has absolutely no financial ties to the product or company I'm about to introduce to you. I've been paid nothing to review this product, and I don't earn a dime off its sale. Nevertheless, I'm incredibly excited to reveal this organic, nutrient-dense greens superfood powder called Boku Super Food. It's simply one of the very best superfood products I've ever seen, and I've been using it myself with outstanding results. It was formulated by Dr. Jameth Sheridan, one of the most revered and widely-recognized experts in superfoods nutrition, and I'm so impressed with the product that I'm awarding it a NaturalNews "Best Product" award.

In my opinion (as you'll see below), this product contains powerful nutritional medicine that can help prevent and even reverse serious diseases that are now devastating our population (like diabetes, heart disease and many others).
