The Aussies look follow a British proposal to force ISPs to terminate ...

That's why we have been pushing a proposal to internet service providers for a commonsense system of warning notices which, if unheeded, would ultimately result in a user having their account suspended or disconnected." ISPs are unhappy with the move. National Internet Industry Association chief executive Peter Corones plans on airing his constituents' complaints to Mr. Conroy later this week. Mr. Corones argues that current penalties are "stiff enough". In Australia downloading music can land you injunctions, damages and costs, fines of up to $60,500 for individuals and up to $302,500 for corporations per infringement and up to five years' jail -- nothing to sneeze at. Corones argues, "Internet service providers are not the enforcers of copyright." The statement is a sharp juxtaposition to ISP policies in the U.S.

Could Bill Clinton be vice president?

Q, readers have posed hundreds of questions, wanting to know what happens after the political parties choose their presidential candidates.

Today, in part II of our response to your questions, we'll look at the way a presidential candidate moves from the party's convention to that moment when he or she faces the chief justice on Jan. 20, 2009, raises his or her hand, and utters, “I do solemnly swear…."

Q. "I live in Canada, but I'm still an American citizen. Can I vote in the primary, or just in the presidential election? How, for both questions?"

Eight More Years?

His subsequent contributions to the working class exceed the combined contributions of all the past five presidents combined.

Unfortunately, Nader lost a few battles, the most critical being his push during the Reagan admininistration to get secure cockpit doors required on commercial aircraft. Ronny Raygun and Company determined that such a law would be too burdensome for business, thereby enabling the 9/11 hijackers to succeed.

The gluten-free phenomenon

Just when bread was starting to make a comeback after the low-carb craze, it has been hit with the gluten-free frenzy.

Hoards of people are giving up gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Yet the growing numbers of gluten avoiders are not only people with celiac disease--which was once dismissed as a rare condition but is now estimated to affect 1 out of every 100 Americans.

Gluten has become the dietary villain du jour, the new "carb," if you will.

Niece of city co-founder, first mayor turns 100

DENHAM SPRINGS — Born 100 years ago, Evelyn Minton Graves wore the bright red dress she had worn to her 90th birthday party and welcomed more than 200 guests to her century-mark birthday party on Jan. 26.

Graves’ grandfather, Uriah Crotwell, fought in the Civil War. Her uncle, George Livingston Minton, was one of the founders of Denham Springs and its first mayor.

Born on Jan. 21, 1908, Graves said she remembers the days of traveling by horse and buggy, washing clothes with a rub board and cooking on a wood stove.

She remembers the Model T Ford that she and her first husband, Gatim Wilkinson, bought, and the DeSoto that followed it.

That second car was a "little classier," Graves said.

Graves raised six children with her first husband, who died in 1969.

Judge will consider new trial for Overton in death of 4-year-old

CORPUS CHRISTI — A district judge will consider a request for a new trial for Hannah Overton, who was convicted of capital murder in the death of a 4-year-old foster child.

The hearing is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 15.

Overton, 30, was convicted last month of capital murder in the death of foster child Andrew Burd, who died on Oct. 2, 2006. Earlier this month, one of her attorneys filed a motion asking 214th District Judge Jose Longoria to grant her a new trial based on numerous claims that prosecutorial misconduct and extensive media coverage prevented Overton from receiving a fair trial.

Longoria sentenced her to life in prison without parole.

An earlier motion also filed by the defense questioned the indictment and the wording of the instructions to the jury, according to court records.

Senators Trounce Transportation Officials

Officials from the Texas Department of Transportation fielded tough questions during a three-hour grilling before a joint Senate committee last Tuesday morning, and one of the toughest lines of inquiry came from Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Austin.

Watson has plenty of reasons to be unhappy with the transportation department. In TxDOT's new world of transportation funding – the world with all those toll roads and public-private partnerships – Central Texas leaders have put their credibility on the line, most recently with a vote last October to, once more, approve a set of toll roads. Unknown to them, though, TxDOT already was planning major budget cuts that were going to trickle down to Central Texas. Watson was more than miffed. He was angry during the joint committee meeting of Senate Finance and Senate Transportation and Homeland Security, coldly leading TxDOT Executive Director Amadeo Saenz and Chief Financial Officer James Bass through a series of questions about what they knew and when.

Skateboarding visions

Skateboarding has become the third-most-popular sport internationally, Arthur said.

Enthusiasts pressed their case with Ulman at a December budget hearing when a Woodbine woman held up petitions that she said had been signed by 600 people who want the county to build a lighted skateboard park in Western Regional Park in Glenwood. The proposed park in Glenwood could be next in line if the Centennial plan is a success.

"If it is respected by the community, we'll probably look at expanding in other areas," Arthur said.

For Sokolosky and Lesko, the new skate park could mean skating from dawn to dusk because the park would operate under the same schedule as Centennial Park.

"The main reason we need [a skate park] is because kids want to skate street elements, skate for free and skate when they want," Lesko said.
