LaVell Edwards: A world-class warrior
That he treats co-workers so well they never want to leave his side? That he can't drive either a golf ball or a car in a straight line? That he does goofy things, such as attend the wrong funeral? That he expected to get fired during most of his career? That he's the finest man you'll ever meet, one who has moved through life without making an enemy, even in the intense world of football? That no one can ever remember anyone saying a bad thing about him, which works out well since no one can remember his saying a bad thing about anyone, either? That, despite success and fame and a healthy income, he has lived in the same modest rambler for 33 years? That one of his real passions is music, and that he has this thing for "Amazing Grace," which could describe the way he has moved through the world? That those who work with him believe he has some mystical power to control the weather? That, of all the things you could say about him, the best is that his wife and three children gush on and on about him? Write a story about LaVell Edwards? We'd better get started .
Paddling it Out
Heather Corey flew in from Manchester, England and put on a dazzling show of technique for the 300+ spectators. She blazed down the challenging fast-flowing course with a total score of 175.2 seconds. Corey has dual citizenship for the USA and UK, learning to race slalom in America as a junior, then going on to win six world championship medals for Great Britain. She is now competing for a slot on the United States Olympic Team, and is a strong contender for a medal at the Olympics this summer in Beijing.Austin Kiefer from Ashville, North Carolina turned in a powerful performance in Men's Kayak — the fastest score of the day at 149.0 seconds."With this event, we've successfully announced to the canoeing world that we have this beautiful warm-water whitewater park, and that it's really worth it for people to come here for winter training and competitions," Michelle Kvanli of Power Olympic Outdoor said. Results for the Olympic Team Trials Qualifier Event:(winners, their hometown, and their combined score fortwo runs (timesplus penalties)Womens Kayak Heather Corey (Manchester, England / 175.2) Jessica Subido (Granite Bay, California /185.4) Kristen Bierle (Boise, Idaho / 240.1)Men's Kayak Austin Kiefer (Ashville, North Carolina /149.0) Pablo McCandless (Charlotte, North Carolina/ 153.7) Ben Kvanli (San Marcos, Texas / 158.8)Canoe (Single) Tyler Hinton (Lafayette, Colorado / 188.2) Matt Fritz (Dallas, Texas / 244.2) Laura Egerdal (Saint Louis, Missouri /304.0)Canoe (Doubles) Ben Kvanli and Mark Poindexter (San Marcosand Austin, Texas / 193.7) Tyler Hinton and Will Grubb (Lafayette,Colorado / 305.0)1918 - #33, Ben Kvanli and Mark Poindexter, 1st place, Doubles CanoeOlympic Whitewater Team Trials QualifyingWomen's Kayak1.
Hot Boys Reunion Canceled Following Shooting Outside Venue
The highly-anticipated Hot Boys reunion performance that was supposed to go down on Sunday night (February 17) at Dream nightclub in New Orleans for NBA All-Star Weekend was canceled before it had a catch of taking place. According to reports, the show -- which would have featured Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile and Mannie Fresh -- was halted due to a shooting that took place outside the venue during the early morning hours of Monday (February 18). Reports indicate that two 24-year-old women and a 26-year-old man were shot by an unknown assailant at around 1:00 a.m. Local police said that the victims were standing on the sidewalk when the gunshots rang out. They were taken to an area hospital very quickly after the incident and are expected to recover.
Dim Sum Glory Is Near
High ceilings and brick walls are a recipe for moderate hearing loss on a busy night. Park your crowd at one of the oversized booths or take over the couch area, order a few too-fab-for-words cocktails and some finger food, and you'll be a happy camper. The vibe: Cool, but in an oddly and completely accessible way; lovely service, and the place seems to attract a slightly younger version of the Zinc crowd: smart, edgy, well-heeled, well-dressed professionals and Yale architecture students. The eats: Enormously promising, and almost there, but not quite; creative oomph sometimes overtakes flavor. Order the Chow platter for two (ribs, dumplings, wings, and rice paper rolls) if you're just picking; rare tuna and seaweed salad is long on texture and short of flavor; kaffir lime and roasted tomato soup has a slightly Mexican edge to it, and feels a bit incongruous here.
